Social Justice Movie Showing - "13th"
Saturday, February 4th at 9:30am in room 202
In its attempt to highlight some of the many issues that focus on our Christian obligation to further God’s Kingdom here on earth, your Social Justice Commission is beginning a film series around topics that deserve our attention and call us to action. The first of these will be held in the Activities Building on Saturday, February 4 at 9:30am in Room 202. The film to be shown is titled “13th” and is a documentary based on the 13th amendment of our Constitution which was designed to abolish slavery in the U.S. Despite the historical importance of this action, the film helps us understand how a simple loop-hole in the amendment has perpetuated a persistent if insidious form of slavery in our country that is tied to massive incarceration and inequality in our judicial system. For example, though black Americans make up 12% of the population, they account for more than 30% of those in prison. The film explores, in depth, the reasons behind these numbers, as well as other factors that foster continued inequality in what should be, but sadly is often not, the “land of the free.”
Please join us to view this important film, and the discussion that will follow. All are welcome, with no advance notice needed. In the months ahead, we will be showing other films with a focus on themes of social justice…so stay tuned.
